Ki Divine and Rus Sheepcott Live! | KPFT Sessions | The Houston Collective

Ki Divine isn’t like these other poets—she’s a spoken word artist, a channeler of sound, spirit, and something ancient. And Russ Sheepcott? He’s not just a flutist. He’s an alchemist of breath and wood, weaving melodies that feel like they’ve existed since the beginning of time. Together, they create something ethereal, something deeply felt. Ki’s words don’t just land—they root. They pull from ancestral knowledge, lucid dreams, and midnight reflections. She’s been writing since she was nine, speaking since she was 11, and doing this professionally for 15 years. Her voice carries the weight of all that experience, yet it feels effortless. Then there’s Russ, whose Native American Aeolian drone flute—handcrafted from a century-old piece of wood—came into his life by cosmic design. He’s only been playing since May of last year, but when you hear him, you’d swear he’s been doing it for lifetimes. The duo met at Ki’s Dallas event, "Verses in Vibes," where Russ showed up with his flute and instantly changed the game. Ki had been searching for a sound to complement her poetry, something ancient, something with weight. The universe delivered. Now, every performance is a unique experience, an unscripted dialogue between spoken word and breath, rhythm and resonance. This KPFT Sessions episode takes you deep into their world—through meditations on self-love, reflections on nature’s sentience, and the kind of love poetry that isn’t just about romance but about survival. Masaya, of course, spends part of the session lost in his own world, asking the crew if they even have an email and attempting to rename the Houston Collective. But hey, we all have our moments. Rico Black keeps things moving, and Bleu makes sure the space feels right for the artists. Settle in for something raw, something real. And if you feel that frequency shift, that’s just Ki and Russ doing what they do best. 🎶 Setlist: Mother Nature is an Empath Insecure Self-Love Love I'm Not Like These Other Poets 🎙 Support KPFT: Sessions like this thrive because of your support.
