The 1972 Election toke place on November 7, 1972. Incumbent Richard Nixon fought for re-election and Many Republicans were all for it. Nixon was somewhat popular for the growth in the economy and using a policy called "detent" which he used for China to have a friendly friendship with the country. Despite this, Some Republicans challenged him seemingly because of his slow plan to bring the trips home from Vietnam. But Nixon easily won the nomination. Many familiar faces appeared for the Democratic Nomination, Like Hubert Humphrey, Edmund Muskie, Eugene McCarthy, George Wallace, and George McGovern. McGovern was always a potential name for the nomination. But compared to the another major candidates, he did poorly. But this time, despite many wanting Hubert Humphrey again as the nomination, McGovern won. He chose Thomas Eagleton as his running mate. However, Eagleton had mental health issues and had depression throughout his life. For some reason, This ended up hurting McGovern. So Eagleton was forced out, and Sargent Shriver, a U.S ambassador to France and brother in law to The Kennedy family was selected as his replacement. McGovern was attacked for being a racial, unrealistic, foolish, and odd guy for his views on the Vietnam War. So it was not looking good for his win. Richard Nixon absolutely DESTROYED McGovern. He received 520 Electoral votes, and 60% of the popular vote. McGovern received 17 Electoral votes from D.C and Massachusetts.
