(15 Dec 2013) Police roadblocks and tight security were in place around Qunu village ahead of Nelson Mandela's funeral on Sunday. Police stopped cars from accessing the road leading to the area around the deceased leader's family home, where a large marquee was erected for the funeral service. Police on the ground in Qunu paid tribute to their beloved leader, with a display at the main police roadblock reading, "Rest in peace Tata Mandela." Some Qunu villagers went to watch the funeral on a live transmission screen set up nearby. People wearing T-shirts bearing Mandela's picture sat watching in silence as the funeral ceremony started. Daily life in the small rural village where Mandela was born didn't appear too affected by the state event. Many villagers decided to stay at home. Nom Thetheli felt sorry she couldn't say goodbye to the anti-apartheid icon in person. "I don't feel happy because I am not attending Mandela's funeral but I accept it because I can see that it's full inside," the local said. "Tata Madiba in his early days would leave his house and walk around Qunu and greet all the locals, but in his final days we couldn't even say goodbye to Tata Madiba," she said, looking at the white tent in the distance. The late president died last week aged 95. His body lay in state for three days this week, drawing huge crowds of South Africans who mourned his death and celebrated his successful struggle against apartheid.
