L2, P1: Some basic concepts of landscape ecology and conservation biology

This is the first part of a video lecture on basic concepts relating to spatial conservation planning. This video introduces types of spatial data and spatial processes, among which habitat loss and fragmentation are emphasized. The lectures belong to a course on spatial land-use planning (ECOS1088), taught by Dr. Kaisa J. Raatikainen at the University of Jyväskylä in spring 2021. The course combines the practices of land-use planning with theoretical background from landscape ecology and conservation science, with specific attention on GIS-based conservation prioritization. The following lectures will dig deeper into the basics of spatial conservation planning, usage of Zonation software as a tool for spatial prioritization, matters of connectivity, costs of conservation, and constraints to prioritization.
