Most flintknappers expect to see a Dalton point, knife, or projectile point when they hear “Dalton.” But in this video, I’m flipping those expectations. Instead of making just a single point, I’ll be taking a big rock and reducing it in ways most modern knappers aren’t used to. My goal: to create a whole range of tools from one core—scrapers, adzes, end scrapers, and more—just like the Dalton people did, rather than aiming for just one or two points like most of us do today. If you’re used to seeing a single finished point, get ready for a different approach to Dalton technology. I’ll show how much potential a single rock really has when you use ancient reduction strategies and maximize every flake. While I’m sharing this result, I have to admit I wasn’t completely satisfied with how it turned out. I missed quite a few flakes and didn’t manage to produce the specific tool flakes I was aiming for. I plan to work another large Burlington rock into Dalton tools and do a better job on it, aiming for better results and a wider variety of tools. Stay tuned to see how much more I can get out of the next core.
