Curious and searching for answers, they connected with a Muslim student from Yemen who introduced them to the true teachings of Islam. What started as simple conversations soon transformed their lives, first when her roommate accepted Islam, and then when Theresa felt the truth settle in her own heart. Just one month after September 11, during one of the most polarizing times in America, Theresa took her shahada, during Ramadan. While many around her expressed anger toward Muslims, she knew in her heart that this was the truth. Embracing Islam in the South was not easy. From workplace prejudice for wearing hijab to unkind treatment in daily life, her faith was tested. But her conversion happened during Ramadan, and her first prayer was Taraweeh at the mosque. Standing shoulder to shoulder with her sisters in faith brought her peace. And when she made sujood for the first time, she felt something she had longed for relief, comfort, and closeness to Allah, especially after the grief of losing her parents and her childhood home.
