Entropion: What You Should Know? Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Entropion of the eyelid is rolling in of the eyelid margin such that the eyelashes are touching and rubbing against the eye. This causes irritation and watering and if it is severe, there may be redness discharge and even pain. If the front part of the eye, which is the cornea, if that gets involved, you can have a lot of problems and the patient is very symptomatic. So what is the cause? The cause is because of an imbalance between the tissues. The strength of one of the muscles is more and it pushes the eyelid in towards the eye. Commonest cause is actually senile or old age where the tissues become inequal and cause the rubbing, rolling in of the margin. But sometimes it is also due to scarring as an acid injuries or chuna injuries. If acid or limestone has fallen into the eye and very rarely it may even be in born as a congenital. The problem with Entropion is that it rubs against the inside of the eye and can cause infections, cornea ulcers. The treatment is mainly surgical, but sometimes temporarily, We can also use medicines to treat the infection, antibiotics and tape the eyelid so that it is away from the inside of the eye. In the surgery we try to restore the balance between the eyelid and strengthen the weaker muscles so that they can be back into the normal position.
