In late February and early March 2022 I visited the Kurdistan Autonomous Region within Northern Iraq for the first time and it quickly became one of my best ever travel experiences. Going on a journey to try the local Kurdish and Iraqi food was also an incredible adventure. I knew little before I arrived apart from the ubiquitous meat-on-stick which is a (delicious) staple of the Middle East, but found the food to be amazingly varied and tasty. While I only scratched the surface of the food during my time there, I tried everything from baked beans which reminded me of an English breakfast to fish slow cooked over an open fire according to a Mesopotamian method thousands of years old (Masgouf, considered the national dish of Iraq). Trying food in Erbil, Sulimaniyah, Duhuk, Halabja and beyond.
