Today’s National Shooting Sports Month rifle is instantly recognizable… but probably not what people think it is: Ruger 10/22 MAGNUM. For a handful of years, two decades ago, Ruger sold a .22WMR version of its American classic, the 10/22 rifle. Ultimately, they said that a combination of reliability issues (heavily created by the wide variation in .22WMR ammo) and lack of consumer interest lead to the model’s discontinuation. There are ways around these issues, as Magnum Research (for example) has shown… but, their version is much more expensive than any Ruger version and it comes with a warning to use specific ammo. I am big fan of the .22WMR and the Ruger 10/22. I have several versions of the rifle, but this one is the prize of my collection… even through is a a very basic rifle. I think the .22WMR is an underrated round for varmint control… and maybe even as a universally useable family home defense option. It’s definitely another great example of a firearm that I don’t bring out to the range very often… but, NSSM gave me the reason!
