The photos in this slideshow were taken by Michael Pietrusewsky while on a visit to Aphrodisias and the House of the Virgin Mary on Mount Koressos near Ephesus in southwestern Türkiye on October 7, 2025, courtesy of Insight Vacations. Aphrodisias is a remarkably preserved ancient Roman provincial capital in modern-day in southwestern Türkiye, famous for its sanctuary of Aphrodite (ancient Greek goddess of love, beauty, pleasure, passion, and procreation) and art produced by its sculptors. The temple of Aphrodite dates from the 3rd century BCE and the city was built one century later. Located in the ancient Roman region of Caria, the city streets are arranged around several large civic structures, which include temples, a theatre, an agora and two bath complexes, showcasing a blend of Greek and Roman artistic traditions that took advantage of a nearby marble quarry. It is a significant archaeological site, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017, where major excavations have been ongoing since the mid-20th century. The Temple of Aphrodite was built in the Ionic order in stages during the Roman period (from 1st century BCE to 2nd century CE) and later converted into a Christian basilica. The Roman theater was built in the second half of the 1st century BCE on the eastern slope of the acropolis. The "House of the Virgin Mary", located in the picturesque hills of Selcuk, is a Catholic and Muslim pilgrimage site in Türkiye, believed to be where the Virgin Mary spent her last years after the death of Jesus. It is located on a mountain near Ephesus in Türkiye and is also known as Meryem Ana Evi. The site is associated with visions of the German nun Anne Catherine Emmerich in the 19th century, which led to its rediscovery by a French priest.
