If this project is realised, about 100,000 containers will be transported to Europe and also from Europe to Asia via Rajin port in a year. I am sure that if things will come to this, the environment for the investment in our zone should be changed radically so that this zone must be developed into the international economic trade zone. This is an historic moment in the two countries' economic cooperation. Now that the railway system is in place, we plan to do a lot of work in the port of Rajin. Coal will be the main product to be transported. The port is very good and is adapted to handle coal. The conditions are very favoUrable for that. We also plan to use the port of Rajin to deliver cargo back to Russia. The port of Rajin is very good for economic development. " 16. Ships and car being unloaded LEAD IN : As speculation over the health of North Korean leader, Kim Jong II continues, and the nation's future remains uncertain , the development of a 'free trade zone' has been boosted by the renovation of railway links between North Korea and Russia. It's hoped that if successful, 100,000 containers from Europe will pass through the zone each year destined for a sea voyage to Asia from Chongjin port. STORYLINE: A remote corner of socialist North Korea has struggled for over a decade to develop as a 'special economic zone', located at the intersection of North Korea, China and Russia's borders. Now it's got new hope, as work starts on a project to renovate a rail link from isolated North Korea to Russia. Local representative, Chae Song Hak, the vice-chairman, People's Committee of Rason City says that freight traffic through the port of Rajin is increasing. The UN programme supports economic development in the area where Korea, China, and Russia meet.
