I'm often wondering : If a musicologist serves for his/her audience the solution of the single beat only, why is nobody asking for the reason of the absurdity of the tens of thousands of speed indications many of the greatest musician's that ever lived on our planet, took the effort to write carefully down? Lack of interest? Lack of being critical? When you do ask, the answers are surprisingly simplistic (the following answers were actually given to me in real life -no names here-, so not a single bit of ironic invention !): 🔽Just practice a bit more (...really??) 🔽 People were more talented back then (also... really??) But hey, dear musicologist, acting like brave captains on the shore : we (all musician's of today), DO practice a lot but still... we don't reach 80% of those silly speeds. And secondly, more talented than we are... genetically different you mean? Not even mentioning the brilliant conclusion of some, that those tens of thousands of indications actually were not meant to be played. It was a joke...Czerny was just triggering the imagination of possible future students (please come study with me, I'll teach you to play that fast !). Yeah, the famous Beethoven student needed that in his 30 years of teaching, starting at age 14 with a constant stream of 12 hours teaching a day, ending with a 100.000 fl in his bank account... O, I believe they're laughing at us from heaven... But seriously, you would be surprised how many actually just take that answer for a fact, easy their consciences with such answer... poor Czerny, Beethoven, Hummel, Moscheles, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Liszt, Ries, Tomaschek... what a waste of time... you could have saved so much time by just writing: "as fast as possible". But there are other musicologists as well that DO take the MM seriously. As Marten Noorduin in his 2013 article published in the Musical Times, called: Czerny's "impossible" metronome marks. The " " suggest there is a solution for it to be found. That is super interesting, since Noorduin is one of the strongest single-beat believers out there. So my guess was the Dutch pianist Noorduin had a lot of things to say, interesting enough to devote my time into a deep reading that I'm sharing here with you. There is no demonstration of Czerny's speeds by him, which is a pity, since, as a graduated pianist from the Tilburg conservatory, he would have been of course in the perfect position to demonstrate practically what he is writing about. My tone in this video might be somewhat different than you are used from me. Remember this: I am talking about the work of the author Noorduin. Not about the person Marten, a confusion so often is made today on social platforms. It is a lengthy video, but I believe it is worth those 30 minutes of your life. I might rework my extensive preparation notes for this episode into an article.
