This video is the 2nd part of a 2 part retrospective looking back at Mark Dacascos and his career as a Hollywood actor. Follow me on Instagram: @dneyts To most people who are not in the martial arts world, Mark Dacascos is either known for being the chairman of Iron Chef, where he is introduced as the nephew of the original Japanese chairman Takeshi Kaga or more recently as Agent Zero in the uber popular John Wick franchise. In my young teens he was simply the cool martial artist that performed capoeira in “Only The Strong” and later became much more known in the French speaking part of Europe when he portrayed the assassin Yo in the “Crying Freeman” movie where he did the most amazing flip I had ever seen up to that day, the butterfly twist. Even though he had technically done the same move in “Only The Strong”, Crying Freeman showed it in slow motion which was even more amazing. We can’t forget that in those days YouTube didn’t exist so if I wanted to re-watch the butterfly twist I’d have to rent or buy the VHS and replay it over and over again. That being said this is the 2nd part in a 2 part retrospective about Mark Dacascos. This video will focus on the 2000s to current times whereas the 1st video focuses on his rise to fame until the end of the 90s. The 2000s started with the Hong Kong movie “China Strike Force”. This movie also features the actor/martial-artist Ken Lo who used to be Jackie Chan’s bodyguard and was featured in numerous Jackie Chan films. So, even though this movie isn’t amazing, just the fact we have Mark Dacascos, Ken Lo, Coolio all blended into some martial arts epic is well worth the watch. Shortly after this movie Mark Dacascos reunited with Crying Freeman director Christophe Gans, upping the surreal manga-style even further with the movie “Le Pacte Des Loups” or Brotherhood of the Wolf in English which was released in 2001. What’s surprising is that this movie was a huge international breakout hit despite being an 18th century martial arts fantasy in French. Brotherhood of the Wolf garnered massive international acclaim. Since this movie was such a huge success at the time it’s no surprise that Hollywood came knocking at Dacascos’ door to act opposite Jet Li in the 2003 movie Cradle 2 The Grave. This is the third in Bartowiak’s flashy collabs with DMX and feature Mark Dacascos in a villain role. I’m kind of seeing a sort of pattern with all these movies casting Dacascos as a bad guy. This movie was interesting in the way that it had a rap soundtrack and everything just seems over the top. It’s sometimes mind blowing that a down’n’dirty action film could have been made on such a grand scale, and in total honesty even though this movie had crazy visuals the plot is absurd, the movie is filled with machismo and even the jokes are pretty childlike and gratuitous. Determined not to be typecast into only action films Mark Dacascos has often worked on some lower profile genres before getting an unexpected call from the producers of Iron Chef America. The show was to be rebooted for an Enlgish language version of the popular Japanese chose. When Dacascos heard that he’d been shortlisted to play the US version of the chairman, he asked his agent to clarify to them “I kick not cook!” but nevertheless landed the job and it’s this long-running role that he’s probably most known for in the USA. Because of his hosting gig the early 2000s were split between being the chairman of Iron Chef, various guest starring roles in high profiles series and a bunch of direct-to-video action flicks that most of the time aren’t really worth watching. One special treat from the 2000s was the appearance of Mark Dacascos in 3 episodes of “The Legend Of Bruce Lee”. This series really makes a fantastic Bruce Lee biopic which shows the action actor’s various facets of his life until his eventual death. One of his biggest TV successes was in the show Hawaii Five-O where he’s had a recurring character for a total of 17 episodes spanning from 2010 to 2018. This is actually a reboot of a show by the same name that ran from 1968 to 1980, an is an action police procedural television series that centers around a special police crimes task force operating under the orders of the governor of Hawaii. Mark Dacascos plays the character of Wo Fat and is a villain and arch nemesis of Steve McGarrett, the head of the fictional Hawaii special task force, Five-O. The character evolves from the beginnings as a master spy for China to later an extremist Chinese agent working with a hawkish Chinese general. Very recently he portrayed Zero is the major theatrical release “John Wick: Chapter 3” playing an assassin who is a big fan of John Wick’s work as an assassin, and is the central antagonist and a major opponent of John Wick: Chapter 3, during which he fights against the protagonist on several location ending in an epic dual. #markdacacos #wunhopkuendo #onlythestrong
