Barigui, Curitiba's largest park, occupies 140 hectares across four neighborhoods and is open year-round, every day of the year. It's a favorite among Curitiba residents—on drizzly and foggy days—for enjoying nature, hiking, and especially for sports. The park's regular attendance is explained by its location near the city center, its attractive terrain surrounded by beautiful scenery (with trees, flowers, a lake, and the city in the background, alternating throughout its 3-km circuit), and its availability of a wide variety of facilities. The site, a former land grant belonging to the explorer Mateus Martins Leme, was transformed into a park in 1972 by then-mayor Jaime Lerner. The name Barigui has indigenous origins and means "river of the special fruit," alluding to the pine cones of the native macaws, which still arouse there. Its 140 hectares are home to three groves, with native forests, sprouting through patches of primary forest, and the presence of a mate, aromatic plants, and orchids, which provide refuge for animals (such as cavies and opossums) and help regulate air quality. The 230,000 m² common lake, protected from the floods of the Barigui River, is immense, where ducks glide along its banks, and white herons forage along its banks until they return for the transition period. UNILIVRE Our quality of life is directly linked to our relationship with the environment in which it takes place. The Universidade Livre do Meio Ambiente was created to examine this relationship in depth in order to seek it harmonious with the process of socioeconomic development. Located in Curitiba, capital of the state of Paraná, Unilivre is a cultural and independent organization. Founded in 1991, it was the first in the world to operate in this model with the purpose of disseminating knowledge for all the duties of an environmental society that is more aware of the development of its rights and citizens with nature.
