This is colour film footage of Wirth's Circus, Australia's largest circus. The location of the big top with four poles was on the lot near the Central Station, Sydney, on Prince Alfred Park. We know that as that was the only time the Wirth circus put four poles up. Established in 1882, Wirth's Circus remained Australia's best-known circus until its demise in 1963. It travelled Australia and New Zealand by its own special trains and drew on the world for its annual programs. When this footage was taken, the first American tractors were being used for loading and unloading and tent erection. Previously these heavy tasks had been handled by the elephants alone.
