(17 Oct 2014) Turkey's pro-Kurdish left-wing People's Democratic Party said on Friday that a meeting next week between Turkish lawmakers and imprisoned Kurdish rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan will be crucial for peace talks on ending a 30-year insurgency. Figen Yuksekdag, co-chair of the People's Democratic Party (HDP), said the heightened tension in Turkey over Islamic State militants' advance on the Syrian town of Kobani threatens the ongoing efforts for a peace process. Kurds in Turkey accuse the government of standing idly by while Syrian Kurds are being slaughtered in the besieged town across the border. Kurdish leaders have warned that the fall of Kobani would end the peace process. Turkey has said it won't join the fight against the Islamic State militants unless the US-led coalition also targets Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime. More than 30 people were killed last week as Kurds, angered at what they said was Turkish impediment to efforts to defend Kobani, clashed with police and supporters of an Islamist group in cities across Turkey. Meanwhile about 150 Turkish writers and poets signed a petition calling on the Turkish government to open a corridor to provide humanitarian and military aid to Kobani. Kurds, who make up an estimated 20 percent of Turkey's 75 (m) million people, have faced decades of discrimination, including restrictions on the use of their language.
