While running for president, Donald Trump repeatedly emphasized a promise to instigate mass deportations, and in the year since his inauguration, his administration has spent more than any previous president on aggressive efforts to find, detain, and deport unauthorized immigrants. Law professor Erin Murphy Barbato and economics professor Jeffrey A. Smith join host Mike Knetter to discuss the economic implications of these policies. Barbato notes that the administration has more than doubled deportations compared to 2024. The U.S., she says, now has more immigrants in custody than any other nation. Smith notes that while there are frequently short-term costs for communities that host large numbers of immigrants, those immigrants provide a long-term economic boost. In particular, he notes that highly educated immigrants produce economic and technological innovation. Following their presentations, host Mike Knetter brought forward questions from viewers.
