Middle Temple

Middle Temple is one of the four historic Inns of Court in the City of London, with the exclusive right to call law students to the Bar to practice as barristers. Known formally as The Honourable Society of the Middle Temple, it is located in the Temple area of London near the Royal Courts of Justice, a district steeped in legal history since the 14th century. The primary function of the Inn is the education and training of barristers. It provides advocacy training, scholarships, and accommodation for its student members. The Inn has occupied its site since the 14th century, on land formerly belonging to the Knights Templar. Its tenure was secured in 1608 by a charter from King James I, which was later confirmed by Queen Elizabeth II in 2008. The Inn is renowned for its historic buildings, many of which are listed. Key structures include the Main Hall, the Library and the Gatehouse. Completed in 1573, the magnificent Elizabethan Main Hall features a double hammer-beam roof and a high table made from a Windsor Park oak, allegedly a gift from Queen Elizabeth I. The Main Hall is famous for hosting the first recorded performance of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night in 1602. Housing approximately 250,000 volumes, the Library holds significant collections, including the historic Molyneux Globes from 1592. The Gatehouse which serves as the entrance from Fleet Street was built in 1684 by Sir Christopher Wren. Together with Inner Temple, the two Inns oversee the historic Temple Church which serves as the church of the two Inns.
