Antoine and Naude from Ocean Conservation Namibia (www.ocnamibia.org) were joined by Johnathan from the Namibia Dolphin Project. It was Johnathan's first trip out with Ocean Conservation Namibia (OCN), and traditionally whenever someone new joins, there is an exceptionally hectic rescue to be had. Today did not disappoint.... In the first group of seals the activists immediately found a large (+- 100kg) Cape Fur Seal with a large bunch of commercial fishing line around his chest and right flipper Naude, still not fully mobile after his bite a few days ago, only there for filming and background support. Antoine chased down the seal and managed to bag it in the net after a short fight. Johnathan stepped in and managed to restrain the animal while Antoine went to work cutting it loose with our Leatherman Raptors. This type of fishing line is the most common entanglement material the activists deal with. It is usually found on much smaller seals.
