Despite a calm and clear night in 1987, the passenger vessel "MV Doña Paz" collided with an oil tanker, resulting in one of the worst maritime tragedies ever recorded. With nearly 4400 passengers losing their lives, this is the #1 deadliest peacetime maritime tragedy, and it ranks as the 4th deadliest overall. For comparison, the Wilhelm Gustloff is the deadliest wartime maritime tragedy with around 9,400 deaths, Gaya had about 7,000, Junyō Maru had 5,600, and then the Doña Paz had 4,386. Interestingly, all of these disasters had significantly more casualties than more famous incidents, such as the Titanic (~1,500 casualties).
