"The Great Train Robbery," filmed in 1903, is considered the very first Western in the history of silent cinema. The film enjoyed unprecedented commercial success. A particular close-up, unrelated to the plot and which could be used by the projectionist to open or close the film, showed the outlaw leader emptying his six-shooter directly into the camera, which greatly impressed audiences. Its legendary status in film history remains undeniable, and the film has since become one of the greatest and most influential Westerns of all time, so much so that in 1990, "The Great Train Robbery" was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress due to its cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance. Directed by Edwin S. Porter for the Edison Manufacturing Company, this short film, composed of 14 chapters, tells the story of a gang of outlaws who attack and rob a steam train at a station in the American West, flee through the mountains, only to be defeated by locals. Filming took place in New York and New Jersey in November 1903.
