Neon lamps can be turned into sawtooth oscillators by giving them a large series resistor and connecting a capacitor in parallel with the lamp. An interesting thing about neon lamps is that they are light sensitive. In this video I made some experiments with five neon lamps, each with a 5 MOhm resistor and a 2.2 nF capacitor, all connected to ground over a common 10 kOhm resistor over wich I extract the audio signal. I feed all five oscillators from a vintage B+ power supply, capable of 0-500 volts. The neon oscillators wake up at about 60-70 Volts and there isn't much of a point to push the supply over 300 Volts for maximum frequency. Linearity. tracking and repeatability is poor, so there will probably not be a CV controlled synth from this experiment, but with an adjustable supply of good precision I think it may be an interesting drone synth. I also intend to combine at least 10 neon lamp oscillators with a number of Flicker Flame neon decoration lamps to add some dramatick crackle effect.
