A playthrough of the potential mid-boss Sho Hayate in the PS2 port of SNK’s The King of Fighters XI. On this day in 2018 I reached 1500 subscribers. Goddamn. Thanks so much to everyone who's followed and supported the channel up to this point. Sho was the main protagonist of Savage Reign and Kizuna Encounter. He was a pretty stereotypical shounen protag, with the exception being that he fights with a boomerang of all things. I'm going to guess it's a Like Jyazu, Sho absolutely rocks in this game. While his specials and normals list is a bit on the short side compared to the main characters, the attacks he does are so good it barely matters. His boomerang throw is relatively useless (except for a bit of chip damage, or in a jumping combo), and so are his two regular supers which are basically a variation of it, but in contrast his combo attacks are absolutely fantastic. His boomerang combo works a bit like K-Dash’s uppercut, where you can add an extra hit on the end with the right input, and his knee shoryuken is just fantastic, easily cancelling into from a combo. He also has another two-part special move which he knocks the opponent against the wall with a lunging kick, and can then hit them in the again as well. The best move of his however is that amazing dive-combo. Not satisfied with a cheap dive-kick, Sho instead has a lunging dive-combo, which hits four times for good damage. It also deals chip damage, and the C variant of it will stretch across the entire length of the screen. Not only that, but he can also use it as a follow up to his launching kick for even more damage. This is made all the better by the fact that the AI rarely defends against this attack, and it really helps to make him into a combo-heavy, offence-based character, who closes in on the opponent to barrage them with combos. In this way, Sho makes not only for a unique character, but a well-built one which can stand against any regular character, and definitely feels like a lot less of a novelty than the other hidden guest characters. All in all, he’s damn fun to play as, like so many of the characters in this game. Another great addition. Next time, we finish up this game’s bosses with the return of yet another character. That’s been quite a big theme since the return to the KOF series, if you couldn’t tell yet.
