Wave theory of double refraction. Huygen explained the phenomenon of double refraction by applying his theory of secondary wavelets. According to this theory 1. A point source of light in a doubly refracting crystal gives rise to two wavefronts. 2. The ordinary wave travels with the same speed vo in all directions and the crystal has a single refractive index for this wave. The O-wavefront is spherical. 3. The speed of extra ordinary wave ve varies with direction . So, the refractive index µe=c/ve also varies with direction for the E-wave. The E-wavefront is an ellipsoid. 4. The O-wave and the E-wave travel with the same speed along the optic axis.
