Welcome to Turtle Island. We are dedicated to protecting the world’s most endangered and overlooked turtles and tortoises through rescue, research, breeding and rewilding. From our scientific centres in Austria and USA to remote wild habitats around the globe, our team works at the frontline of species conservation – combining science, passion and global cooperation to give turtles a future. With more than 300 species and subspecies and more than 3.000 individuals, were are the species richest conservaion center worldwide. Our work goes beyond species protection through BIODIVERTIS, our genetic marker technology that creates unique, tamper-proof digital identities for animals and plants. This allows us to trace origin, prove legality, protect biodiversity and fight illegal wildlife trade on a scientific level. Our core conservation projects focus on some of the most endangered freshwater turtles and tortoises in the world: the Vallarta Mud Turtle in Mexico, Eiselt’s Pond Turtle in Turkey, Eastern Hermann’s Tortoise in Greece, the Northern River Terrapin in Bangladesh, and the European Pond Turtle in Austria and Slovenia. Each project is a race against time – and a story of hope, protection and recovery. Looking ahead, our vision is embodied in the Turtle Island Dome: a unique architectural and conservation landmark shaped like the back of a turtle. The Dome is designed to integrate and reunite all Turtle Island animals in one sustainable, climate-controlled space, bringing together breeding stations, research laboratories and education areas, and creating a global hub where conservation, science and public awareness meet. Join us at Turtle Island. Your support amplifies our rescue, research and rewilding efforts — every donation, every share, every voice helps.
