"Although intervention has the greatest impact on Autism Spectrum Disorder if it begins before age three, 80% of children who need early intervention are missed (CDC, 2009; Filipek et al., 1999; NRC, 2001; USDOE, 2011). On average, children with ASD are not diagnosed until well after the age of four, with the age of diagnosis being higher in disadvantaged populations (CDC, 2014). Therefore, those who interact with children on a daily basis, such as early childcare providers, clinicians, and caregivers, are at the front line of both detecting and providing appropriate supports for young children at risk for autism (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Department of Education, 2014). In order to accomplish this goal, these frontline providers must be empowered with the knowledge of typical social communication development and an understanding of the earliest red flags for autism."
