Canada Wildfire NSERC Strategic Network presents this special session with Jane Park (Banff National Park; Parks Canada), and Dr. Chris Watson (Jasper National Park; Parks Canada). Park discusses how lidar data is utilized to inform fire management practices in Banff National Park, in addition to monitoring vegetation change over time, landscape resilience, forest succession mapping, and wildfire risk modeling. Park emphasizes the use of lidar data in fuel modeling in the fire-prone Banff ecosystems. Watson presents the applications of lidar data within the Jasper National Park especially regarding mountain pine beetle monitoring, habitat management and monitoring, and trail and recreational use management. Watson emphasizes the opportunities that are available for future lidar data applications. The session was given in a hybrid format to address the University of Lethbridge and Canada Wildfire Network’s introduction to Airborne lidar course (GEOG X030). Session hosts Dr. Chris Hopkinson and Dr. Laura Chasmer have active research collaborations with both Banff National Park and Jasper National Park for forest fuel mapping and research.
