FORT PIERCE, Fla. (CBS12) — The Fort Pierce City Commission held a special meeting Monday to discuss the future of the city’s police department, just one day after longtime Police Chief Diane Hobley-Burney submitted her resignation. In her letter, Hobley-Burney wrote, “I feel it is time for me to turn the page and embrace the next chapter of my journey. Therefore, I am formally tendering my resignation, effective 90 days from the acceptance date by the Commission.” Commissioners voted 3-2 to accept her resignation, but under the terms approved Monday, Hobley-Burney will not return to the department. Instead, she’ll remain on paid administrative leave for the next 90 days, retaining her salary and health benefits during that period. Her resignation comes on the heels of a scathing internal report and union-led survey that painted a troubling picture of conditions inside the Fort Pierce Police Department. The survey revealed deep frustrations among officers, with many citing low pay and a lack of support as reasons for the department's high turnover rate.
