In the Old Testament, two important observances were given to Israel: • Passover – observed on the 14th day of the month of Nisan • Day of Atonement – observed on the 10th day of the month of Tishri These two sacred observances were separated by about six months, yet they are deeply connected in God’s redemptive plan. The Passover lamb pointed to the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the true Passover Lamb who was crucified on Nisan 14. His sacrifice provided the ransom price for humanity. The Day of Atonement, however, represented the work of reconciliation—when the High Priest would enter the Most Holy Place and sprinkle the blood for the sins of the entire nation. In the Gospel Age, these two events find their spiritual fulfillment. Christ, our Great High Priest, first offered Himself as the Passover sacrifice and then ascended to heaven to present the merit of His sacrifice before God. The period between Passover and the fulfillment of the Day of Atonement symbolically represents the entire Gospel Age, during which the Church participates with Christ in proclaiming the value of His sacrifice. As believers partake in the Memorial, they proclaim the power of Christ’s sacrifice and the continuing work of reconciliation that will ultimately bless the whole world.
