Sweltering Sun and SD40-2s on the Indiana Northeastern Railroad

After chasing the NRHS Steam excursion across the Indiana Northeastern the day prior, we would wake up early the next day to catch some INER freight action. Bright and early on Tuesday July 15th, 2025, we returned trackside to find an INER crew as they began their day in Hamilton, Indiana. Just after 7 AM on a sunny, hot and hazy morning, the engineer started their locomotives, IN SD40-2s 3084 and 3067 and began drilling out their inbound cars brought in from the NS interchange in Montpelier, Ohio the day before. While IN 3084 wears the railroad's sharp black, yellow and white scheme, the 3067 still wears the colors of its previous owner, Lake State Railway, albeit with Indiana Northeastern lettering. After putting their cars together, the crew sets out west for South Milford, with a stop in Ashley to add more cars to their 39-Car train. We catch them as they pass the Grain Elevators in South Milford and head around the corner to leave their entire consist at a fairly new transload siding. An hour after catching them arriving, the crew would re-emerge with the pair of SD40-2s running lite to set-out IN 3084 for future switching at South Milford, leaving the former LSRC 3067 as the sole locomotive for the day's work. With 3067 one empty lumber car to take back east to Hamilton, they were off. A little later on in the lunch hour, we'd catch up with the INER boys once again as they began their trek north to Coldwater from Hamilton with a good sized consist and IN SD40-2 3067 still leading solo. We'd catch them in Pleasant Lake and in Fremont as they drilled out cars for Berry Plastics before calling it a chase and heading west to Illinois. What a neat railroad this one is to check out.
