This is a film about the origin, history, culture and people of Ikorodu. We tell you need to know about their #tourist attractions and cultural #festivals. Ikorodu is located North-East of Lagos State along the Lagos Lagoon and it shares a boundary with Ogun State. As one of the most populous towns in Lagos State, Ikorodu’s population is estimated at about 2million people. The town is situated approximately 36km North of Lagos; bounded on the South by the Lagoon and shares a boundary with Ogun State in the North. While in the East, it has a common boundary with Agbowa-Ikosi, a town in Epe Division of Lagos State. Ikorodu existed in the 17th century with early settlers’ who descended from the Remo stock of Yoruba tribe and settled on the plateau. The early settlers named their new found land Okorodu which was generated from two words ‘Oko’ and ‘Oodu’. Oko means farmland, while Oodu is a species of vegetable that predominantly grew on Ikorodu’s plateau. “Oodu was an edible vegetable just like pumpkin leaf (ugwu), bitter leaf and spinach” Chief Banjoko said. Over time the name Okorodu was later called Ikorodu. Ikorodu belongs to Akarigbo from Sagamu and all lands from Sagamu to Ikorodu port belonged to Akarigo. Akarigbo was the king in Sagamu and he had eight sons who were; Ogarimade, Lasuwon, Rademo, Anoko, Ogbonyari, Ajegorishe, Sekomade, and Adiolapo. Akarigbo and his sons used the massive forest for farming activities and hunting expeditions. Chief Banjoko also explained why Ikorodu was also referred as Ikorodu Oga, he stated that, “Oga was one of the sons of Akarigbo and also an elephant hunter. Oga did not have a child of his own but he is regarded as the founder of Ikorodu because he discovered Ikorodu.” We also discuss prominent Nigerians who are from Ikorodu like Folorunsho Alakija, Funke Akindele-Bello, TOS Benson, Folake Odulate, Adeniran Ogunsanya, Ayodele Oluwatuminu Awojobi, and a host of other great men and women.
