Program note: This piece is written as a companion piece to Na Hòro Eile, which I wrote for the Ligeti Quartet last year. Both pieces aim to take advantage of the ability of string instruments to sound remarkably like the human voice – their humanity possibly contributing to their popularity among composers and listeners alike. I was inspired by Gaelic-language musical traditions such as puirt à beul (mouth music) and waulking songs, which use the sounds of the syllables themselves to paint the scene and enhance the rhythm of the music. Le Dian (“leh Jian”) means “with intensity” in Gaelic. When writing this piece, I’d been getting a lot of comments of late about my music being “intense”, especially since just recently completing a dramatic larger work for choir and percussion for my PhD portfolio. I figured - why not focus on that? We all have tendencies and hallmarks in our compositional voices, best to make the most of them. I used incessant ostinatos, position shifting and polytonality to ratchet up tension bit by bit in this piece, as an exploration of this perceived intensity.
