Many people know AFS as a leader in international exchange—but few realize our mission began on the battlefields of World War I. Before we were a global education organization, we were the American Field Service, a volunteer ambulance corps. On February 13, 2026 we hosted a special virtual event to explore how the courage of these young drivers laid the foundation for the global citizenship mission we champion today. Watch University of Pennsylvania Lecturer Lisa Ann Britton sharing her latest research, featuring: The Archives: A look at first-hand accounts and artifacts from the young volunteers in France. The Legacy: How their "service for a greater good" inspired a dedicated Global Seminar at UPenn. The Future: Learn how you can stay involved with AFS and follow along with Professor Britton’s work Whether you're an AFS alum, a history enthusiast, or a professional interested in the evolution of global NGOs, this session offers a unique look at how a century of history shapes our work today.
