(10 Apr 1995) English/Arabic/Nat Hundreds of people have turned out for the funerals of Israelis killed in a suicide car bomb attack on a bus in the Gaza Strip on Sunday. The bus bombing was one of two attacks that killed six Israelis and injured more than 40 others. The funerals took place as Palestinian police in Gaza arrested more than 150 suspected Islamic militants. A large crowd of family, friends and fellow mourners gathered at the cemetary in Holon, outside Tel-Aviv Monday for the funeral of Sergeant Yuval Regev (20), the second victim of Sunday's attack to be buried today. People also gathered to mourn in Gaza as family and fellow Hamas supporters gathered at the house of the second suicide bomber, Amar Abu Amouna (22), to mourn his loss. Under pressure to crack down on Islamic militants following suicide attacks that killed six Israelis, Palestinian police arrested 112 activists Monday. A special court sentenced an activist to 15 years in prison for recruiting suicide bombers. Tension between Arafat and the more militant Palestinian factions looks set to increase following the arrests and sentencing. Increased tensions between Arafat and the Israelis could threaten the whole Israel-P-L-O peace process - and P-L-O chief Yasser Arafat's political future. Arafat created the military court two months ago as a sign of his intent to curb militant violence, but no trials had been held until this session. The crackdown on the militants followed demands by Israeli Cabinet ministers and military leaders that Arafat clamp down on extremists opposed to the Israel-P-L-O peace process. Nasser Yousef, head of security in the Palestinian Authority, told the press that actions had been taken by the P-A to round up militants and prevent future attacks. SOUNDBITE: (Arabic with English translation) "Question: Can we expect other trials like this? Answer: In my estimate, yes, you can expect more." SUPER CAPTION: Nasser Yousef, P-A head of security in Gaza While the P-A cracked down on Islamic fundamentalist supporters, Mahmoud Zahar, a leading spokesman for Hamas seemed to imply that the group didn't want to see a civil war breaking out. SOUNDBITE: "The red line is civilian war. We are not going to participate in the civilian war." SUPER CAPTION: Mahmoud Zahar, leading Hamas spokesperson. Hamas and Islamic Jihad activists have sworn to continue their holy war against Israel.
