Bennett Parten discusses his book, Somewhere Toward Freedom Sherman's March and the Story of America's Largest Emancipation. The book tells the story of Sherman's March through the south as a social history of the refugee crisis brought on by the war and the Emancipation Proclamation. As freed slaves rushed toward the Union forces, they brought with them challenges and opportunities that helped end the war and shape Reconstruction. Here is our conversation from April 17, 2025. Bennett Parten is an Assistant Professor of History at Georgia Southern University. --- The Cleveland Heights-University Heights Library's 1619 Project discussion group meets every second Thursday of the month. We discuss how the legacy of slavery remains a dominant factor of American political, cultural, and social spheres. The library program centers on the articles included in the New York Times Special Sunday Magazine dated August 20, 2019. The program began in October 2019 and has had over 500 people participate. All interviews done by John Piche'.
