Periodic oil filter changes on our Honda XR650R motorcycle softened the filter cover threads. The replacement engine side casting is expensive and time consuming to replace. A better, permanent solution was a thread upgrade with a Time-Sert® thread repair kit. Quality tooling in the Time-Sert® 6mm kit can be used on future thread repairs for this thread size and pitch. Repairs like this are common on motorcycles and automotive alloy engines. While saving time and cost, the Time-Sert® repairs produce a much stronger thread than the OEM casting material. At this side cover, both the good and weak casting threads were upgraded to Time-Sert® stainless steel inserts. If there concern about electrolysis or corrosion from the mating of aluminum and stainless steel, a coating of 242 Threadlocker or Permatex 80078 Anti-Seize Lubricant on the outer threads of the inserts can serve as a barrier against electrolysis between the stainless steel insert and aluminum alloy casting. If you are still concerned about electrolysis, Time-Sert® makes carbon steel and even T351 aluminum inserts. Time-Sert® repair kits are available for spark plug threads as well. Our initial repair was the Honda XR650R's spark plug threads, an upgrade and restoration alternative to a costly new cylinder head casting.
