#SPIKEisland #ALCATRAZinEUROPE #PRISONdepot We went to COBH in CORK to experience SPIKE ISLAND TOUR which is just off the CORK HARBOUR, IRELAND. You'll see here how prisoners were punished in the 1850s until about recent times. Spike Island is 103 acres with a fort that was turned into prison at some time in the past. The last prison was released in 2004. This FORT MITCHEL (The Prison) itself is bigger than the whole ALCATRAZ Island. It measures 25 acres while the latter is 22.5 acres only. SPIKE ISLAND was also once used for defence because of its strategic location being in the heart of CORK HARBOUR or cork bay itself. The island was used as a prison depot where prisoners await before they were shifted to AUSTRALIA for exile or further imprisonment. The spike island tour starts from Cork harbour. You get on the ferry and it takes about 10 minutes to go and coming back longer because of the low tide (depends on the season and time). The guided tour lasts about 40 minutes where you'll know more about the history of the island. After that, you can roam around the fort and the whole island itself. The stay is around 3.5 hours until your next ferry back to Cobh harbour. There is a cafe within the fort and in fairness, it's a good size inside but it is closed for indoor sitting at the moment but there are tables and chairs for outdoor sitting. You can also bring your own food and wander around the island but the island is bigger than you think so you might not get time. It would have been nicer if you can pick your own time going back? Truly a different tour experience for the family and an awakening for the younger ones not to misbehave!
