It can be generalized which means whole body itching some patients can have itching only in their private parts, in the vaginal area. This itching in the vaginal area could be an indication of an infection or it can be a physiological itching so due to pregnancy hormones and the hormonal changes there is increased secretion from the cervix increased vaginal secretions, the vaginal wall becomes thickened also there is change in the vaginal pH which can lead to itching in the vaginal area. Also these can put the woman at risk for yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis. All these conditions can lead to itching in the vaginal area. Other conditions which can cause itching in the vaginal area are pubic lice, presence of parasites in the intestines which can crawl out during the night and lead to itching in the anal and vaginal areas. So all these things can be a cause of vaginal itching and your doctor would look for the cause accordingly. Whether this vaginal itching can harm the baby. Presence of Group B streptococcus in the vagina. So presence of it during labour leading to pre-term labor and leading to respiratory distress in the newborn and having to have a NICU stay. Vaginal infection should be promptly treated and Group B streptococcus. If present should be recognized early and treated to prevent neonatal problems and have a better pregnancy outcome.
