Hello Hi, And welcome to this episode of Geography Girl, Here is the first in a bit of a series i'd like to do, exploring how different political movements use urban design as a medium for exerting their political will on the people. What better place to start than with Italian architectural styles during Mussolini's rule where there was an interesting mix of big impressive buildings, juxtaposing the austere and functional. Italian rationalism stood out in this period, characterised by simplicity and symmetry. Rationalists engaged in a tug of war with Futurists, who's obsession with machinary and technology designed large and impressive buildings, creating a sense of macho-ism, violence and urgency.
