Manipur Violence: Tensions flared in Manipur’s Churachandpur on Thursday night as locals clashed with police after tearing down decorations set up for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s September 13 visit. Visuals showed bamboo frames being vandalised and set on fire, with police resorting to lathi charge to control the crowd. Security forces later brought the situation under control, terming the damage “minor.” Modi’s upcoming visit — his first since the ethnic violence began in May 2023 — has triggered divided reactions in the town, with some groups planning black attire protests and even displaying coffins near the venue.
