The death of the UCPMB rebel commander, Ridvan Qazimi-Lleshi, was first reported by Serbian government press office in Bujanovac, just outside the area where Yugoslav troops were advancing. The office quoted "unconfirmed sources close to the militant extremists," and attributed the killing to likely "conflict among the Albanian extremists." Ethnic Albanian sources who demanded anonymity later confirmed his death, saying Lleshi had been shot by a sniper in the village of Trnovac after leaving negotiations with NATO officials. An associate of Lleshi, Jonuz Musliu, accused "Serb snipers" of the killing. Lleshi was among those rebel commanders in the so-called buffer zone separating Kosovo from the rest of Serbia willing to compromise on demands that the insurgents end their struggle. The rebels agreed earlier this week to lay down their arms and let the Yugoslav army move into the last part of the buffer zone, set up originally in 1999 to put distance between Belgrade's forces and NATO peacekeepers in Kosovo.
