I’m Martin Sasada, I'm the consultant anaesthetist and I work regularly with Phil Guest, who is the consultant facial surgeon. I've now personally treated over 50,000 patients under sedation, in my career. In this video, I'm going to talk briefly about what I see as being the benefits of sedation for facelift surgery. The first consideration, of course, is that sedation is safer than general anesthesia and I'll discuss this in another video in the series. Having said that, nowadays, general anesthesia is actually very safe, provided it's given by the appropriate personnel in the appropriate setting. However, sedation is undoubtedly simpler and safer than general anaesthesia. Under sedation, the patient's protective airway reflexes are maintained throughout the procedure. In addition, fewer drugs are used during sedation and is therefore, a much lower risk of an allergic reaction. The fact that sedation is so safe, means it's ideal for use in patients who may have a significant inter-current medical condition. Secondly, recovery after sedation is at a much better quality and much quicker than after general anesthesia. Patients tend to get back to normal almost immediately after having sedation, without any of the side effects associated with having a GA such as sickness, vomiting, sore throat or headache. Thirdly, in my experience, most of the sedation techniques tend to have extremely high patient acceptance. After sedation, patients generally report one or two things, either they remember nothing at all about the procedure or they describe having felt really great throughout the procedure and this is probably euphoric effect caused by the drugs that we use. However, the key to success with the use of sedation for facelift surgery is effective local anesthesia and this obviously requires a very close working relationship with the operating surgeon. In summary, these are the three main reasons why we now exclusively use sedation for all our facelift surgery and with great success.
