Be curious, not judgmental. SoCO Homeless Support Project (Female Homelessness Hong Kong Homeless World Cup Friend Home Hostel Trapped Experience Centre ) The Victoria Harbour waterfront is lined with towering skyscrapers, and at night, the area is ablaze with dazzling lights, yet the homeless live on the fringes of the community, beyond the reach of these lights. We often encounter them on street corners, in parks, and on pedestrian walkways. Many will pass by them, but few actually approach and understand their lives. Everyone has their own story from the past, a place they once called home. We should maintain curiosity about each person, rather than make subjective judgments. By providing care and support, we can help transform their lives, allowing their talents and responsibilities to be restored to them. Their lives can be reignited to shine upon others. Care & Support Networking Team In 2003, SoCO started a pioneering project, the Care and Support Networking Team (CASNET) – to engage homeless people, persons in mental recovery, ethnic minorities, as well as people with special needs living in West Kowloon. By organizing late night outreach and home visits, SoCO identifies and assists those with housing, financial and employment needs. Friend Home, Homeless hostel for singletons In 2018, seeing the continued issue of street sleepers, as well as the government's shortage of subsidized single-person hostels and their short residency periods, our organization developed the Friend Home Hostel hostel for singletons program. This provides street sleepers with longer-term accommodation arrangements and advocates for the government to improve the current hostel system. Pilot Scheme to Subsidise Using Rooms in Hotels and Guesthouses as Transitional Housing Subsidised Project SoCO received funding from the Housing Department in 2021 to operate the Pilot Scheme to Subsidise Using Rooms in Hotels and Guesthouses as Transitional Housing Subsidised Project. This scheme provides emergency accommodation services for homeless users or those living in unsuitable accommodations. The guesthouse is located in the Yau Tsim Mong district and offers 185 guestroom units. In total, 285 households comprising 320 individuals have benefited from this service. Hong Kong Homeless World Cup Hong Kong has been sending teams to participate in the Homeless World Cup since 2005. This initially promoted through a collaboration between SoCO and the Wofoo Social Enterprises. A group of volunteers from diverse professional backgrounds formed an executive committee responsible for organizing, training, and sending teams to compete in the tournament. Life Stories of the trapped experience centre SoCO will launch a brand new physical exhibition centre including a one-to-one restoration of the reality of grassroots housing with grassroot users guides for Human-library service “Trapped Experience Centre Exhibition”, so that visitors can feel and experience the poor living conditions of grassroots.
