Reactions have trailed the approval of the Emergency Rule in Rivers State, by the National Assembly on Thursday Despite the call against a voice vote, Senate president, Godwill Akpabio put the matter to a voice vote, with lawmakers overwhelmingly supporting the president’s proclamation. The seal of approval for the president’s proclamation on Rivers state, came via voice vote during plenary in the green chamber of the House of Representatives on Thursday. Before the house commenced debate on the president’s request, house of representatives member Obi Aguocha from Abia state raised a point of order, saying the constitutional procedures must be followed as stipulated in section 305 and that head counts should be taken. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday, lauded the national assembly for the patriotic approval of the emergency rule in Rivers State. In a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, the president’s special adviser on information and strategy, Tinubu commended the lawmakers decision to prioritize the security and welfare of Rivers above partisan interests and other considerations. Meanwhile, the newly appointed sole administrator of Rivers state, Ibok-Ete Ibas, formally assumed office on Thursday. He was welcomed by officers of the Nigerian Army at the Port Harcourt airport and went straight into a closed-door meeting with senior security officers and state officials. A Rivers state indigene, Daniel Wariboko, has sued President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Government for suspending Governor Sim Fubara, his deputy, and the State House of Assembly. Wariboko instituted the suit at a Federal High Court in Abuja, and prayed the court to nullify the action taken by the President which he says is contrary to the 1999 Nigerian Constitution as amended, he posted a copy of the suit on Instagram. The Chairman of Obio Okpor local government area of Rivers State, Chijoke Ihunwo was seen in a video singing Governor Fubara’s praise during an event. Chijoke posted the video on his X account, with the caption, On Governor Fubara’s Mandate, We Stand. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has announced a coalition with Labour Party leader, Peter Obi and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
