Bastards Canteen has never been just a restaurant — it’s a living, breathing gathering place for Veterans, families, and the heart of the Downey community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we built our Back Patio to provide a safe outdoor space when indoor dining was shut down. What began as a response to crisis evolved into something much more powerful — a home for healing, connection, and purpose. That Back Patio became the core of our VetWorks initiative, a space where we’ve proudly connected over 1,000 Veterans with life-changing resources like housing, employment opportunities, mental health support, and nonprofit services. It wasn’t just a patio — it was a launchpad for second chances and renewed purpose. Unfortunately, due to updated city regulations, we were recently forced to take down this vital space. Built with our own funds during one of the most challenging economic times, we received no external support or reimbursement. To meet current code requirements and rebuild properly, we’re now facing over $60,000 in city-imposed fees — on top of an estimated $80,000 in construction costs.
