A History of English Literature by Arthur Compton-Rickett is a remarkable, out-of-print volume that once formed part of my English Honours syllabus at Loreto College, Darjeeling. This is not a dry textbook. What struck me then — and still does now — is the tone: lucid, and quietly lyrical. Compton-Rickett writes literary history as a living current, shaped by social forces, imagination, and the inner life of nations, rather than as a parade of dates and labels. This particular edition is an Indian reprint (1969 / 1971, reprinted 1974) from Universal Book Stall, Delhi–Kanpur — long unavailable and increasingly hard to find. I don’t know anyone else who still has this exact book, and certainly no digital version exists. Think of this as an oral archive — a way of keeping alive a style of literary thinking that deserves to be heard again. If you love English literature, old syllabi, forgotten voices, or simply beautiful prose about ideas, you’re very welcome here. Subtitles have been carefully reviewed for accuracy, especially for names and historical references. Thank you for listening.
