Did you know that on a global scale, we have about 25 million unsafe abortions performed annually? Women need to know how to get safe abortion services and access contraceptives. In this 8-minute video, Suzanne Majani of Ipas Africa Alliance speaks on the right to safe abortion services and access to contraceptives. She focuses on the General Comment No. 2 on Article 14 of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (General Comment No. 2 of the Maputo Protocol) which was adopted by the African Commission in 2014. She provides the why the General Comment No.2 was needed, process of developing it and highlights the impact since the adoption of the general comment on the sexual and reproductive rights of women and girls. A General Comment is a policy document that provides guidance for the practical implementation and evaluation of delivery of human rights by governments. It gives a common understanding and guidelines of how a particular instrument like the Maputo Protocol can be implemented at the national level.
