Episode 3: Reimagining Conservation through Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas.

In this episode RAVEN talks with KJ England, Planner and Consultant for Salmon Parks. Through this conversation, we will learn about the importance of Indigenous protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs) and the importance of decolonial conservation practices. KJ (she/they) is fourth-generation Irish immigrant/settler from Parkdale, Toronto and Saugeen Treaty 45½ who works as a socio-ecologist and resides in the traditional territory of the Esquimalt and Songhees First Nation. KJ brings 15 years of experience in remote, coastal community-centered conservation (BC, East Africa, Nunavut) to Salmon Parks and the Mowachaht/ Muchalaht First Nation as a planner and consultant. What is Salmon Parks: Salmon Parks are Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas established under the leadership of the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation. These parks aim to restore wild salmon populations by recovering key watersheds in Nootka Sound, integrating Nuu-chah-nulth knowledge, values, and guiding principles such as Hishuk Ish Tsawalk (everything is connected), Isaak (respect for all), and Uu-a-thluk (taking care of).
