More like Mary LAME, am I right guys? Come on, up top dude... Guys? In January of 2008, the first episode of one of the greatest television series of all time would air; starring a chemistry teacher faced with a terminal illness, and in his helplessness, decides to start producing and distributing methamphetamine. Walter White's biggest antagonists are his distributor, Gus Fring, his brother in law, DA Hank Shrader, and any number of gangsters that want to exploit Walter's fragility. The most hated character however, is none other than Skyler White, yo. Her greatest crime? Impeding fun. Skylar was constantly inhibiting Walter's criminal career in the name of keeping their family safe, and because the best moments are often when Walter is transforming into his Heisenberg persona, Skylar White is thus a direct impediment to the viewer's desires. Fast forward to 2023 and we get Mary Jane Watson, a rebel reporter working alongside Peter Parker and Miles Morales whose greatest crime is the same, an impediment to fun. Insomniac has a Mary Jane problem, and it’s one that will take a lot of work to solve, and it’s one that is much deeper than people like to admit. I want to take some time today to explore exactly why Mary Jane was so disliked in Spider-Man 2, how we got there, and how we can fix it. Before we look closely at how Mary Jane was portrayed in the second game, we need to revisit what defined Mary Jane in Spider-Man PS4, because a big part of where she disappoints for many is her mischaracterisation. In the first game, Mary Jane is a budding journalist who previously broke up with Peter because she felt she was treated a liability instead of a partner. MJ isn’t content with being a woman in the chair. She’s not exactly asking to dodge bullets, but wants to be in the field, and making an impact in the same way Spider-Man does. A lot of this comes from her own insecurities, and that isn’t unreasonable. I’m sure if my wife was Spider-Woman I’d feel a comparative inferiority. Part of Mary Jane and Peter's story is both of them learning to accept who they are in this dynamic and work together. Peter needs to accept that Mary Jane isn’t just going to sit on the sidelines, and Mary Jane needs to accept that Peter physically cannot sit idly by while she endangers herself. So, Mary Jane gets in the field, but I want to call attention to how she functions in gameplay. Mary Jane's characteristic skillset revolves around her occupation, which is investigation and social engineering. We see these skills being put to use in the very moments we meet her. She has convinced someone to let her into Wilson Fisk's museum, and within it, observes parts of the environment to uncover his secrets. MJ never flat out punches or tazes anyone, at least not yet. Think about all of her missions and the tactics she uses. When entering Tombstone's hideout, she distracts enemies, and finds evidence of his involvement with Li. Next, she tries to infiltrate a sable base using lures, turning off lights, and again, sneaking around. In her final mission, she gains access to Norman's suite by social engineering, manufacturing enough outrage for her to slip by, and then once inside the apartment, is able to find the secret lab by, you guessed it, investigating. We are playing, in essence, journalism at its finest. Of course this final mission sees her using a stun gun to dispatch enemies, but this is for a very brief moment, and detection still means death. Spider-Man is one of the biggest heroes today, and the Marvels Spider-Man games, starting with Spider-Man PS4 or otherwise Spider-man Remastered. I previously covered some foreshadowing in Marvels Spider-Man in a different Spider-Man essay. But when looking specifically at Insomniac, and Marvels Spider-Man 2, and Marvels Spider-Man Miles Morales, we see that in Marvels Spider-Man 3 there is a Mary Jane problem. What is the problem with Mary Jane in Spiderman 2? Well, lets look at MJ in the first game and MJ in Spiderman 2 to find out.
