Russia’s state security services planned to kidnap and kill two of The Insider’s investigative journalists, Christo Grozev and Roman Dobrokhotov. The operation was led by Jan Marsalek — a former Austrian tech executive whose CV also includes close collaboration with Russian intelligence. The journalists’ “crime”? Exposing the FSB agents behind the poisoning of opposition leader Alexei Navalny. In December 2020, just days after that investigation was published, the order came down from the top of the Kremlin: find Grozev and Dobrokhotov, and silence them — permanently. For over two years, Marsalek’s team used forged identity documents to follow the journalists across Europe — filming them with hidden cameras, setting unsuccessful honey traps, and even discussing assassination plots involving a sledgehammer. The Insider obtained exclusive access to their intercepted communications.
